In April 2024, Bitcoin developers Keonne Rodriguez and William "Bill" Lonergan Hill were arrested in pre-dawn FBI raids for building Samourai Wallet — a non-custodial Bitcoin privacy tool. Despite operating in full compliance with the law as they and their advisors understood it, both men were sentenced to around 5 years years in prison and $250,000 fines each. Developers should not go to prison for writing code that bad actors end up using.
